History:
The disc golf course located within the city limits of Springfield, Minnesota (Springfield actually is credited with a second disc golf course in Mound Creek County Park, located nine miles to the southwest of Springfield), began it's existence in the early Spring of 2006, when Chamber of Commerce Executive Secretary Marlys Vanderwerf suggested that the City consider disc golf as another recreational opportunity for area residents, as well as visitors at the Rothenburg Campground. Marlys contacted PDGA and MFA member Bill Ashton regarding his potential availability in designing a course, as well as area resident Derek Tonn, who she knew enjoyed playing disc golf. Together they began to evaluate potential locations for a nine-hole course, along with Springfield's City Manager, City Attorney and City Council.

Two primary locations were initially being considered for the design: one location would follow the southern banks of the Cottonwood River in Riverside Park, traveling behind the town's football stadium into a heavily-wooded area on the northeast corner of the park, while the second location would follow the banks of the Cottonwood River immediately behind (to the West) of the Rothenburg Campground, with two finishing holes by the ice rink within Riverside Park. Through the course of numerous discussions, a third location was also considered...following the Cottonwood River and walking/biking trails down to Salonek's Pit. This third location ended up becoming the preferred location for the course, which had also expanded from nine to twelve holes. Baskets were installed on September 7, 2006, with a formal opening event and dedication in the community on May 12, 2007.

Course Facts:
- Four of the course's holes are immediately adjacent to water, with five baskets not visible off the tee.
- The course measures 2,594 feet off the "amateur" or "recreational" tees, 2,770 feet off the "pro" or "tournament" tees.
- Par for the course is 36, with a course record of -6 being set by PDGA pro Dean Anderson in December 2006 (30 shots).
- Well over 250 volunteer hours went into the planning and installation phases of the project, with everyone from church youth groups to senior citizens volunteering their time and effort to make the course suitable for play.
